Digital waste tracking at the tip
Since 1 October 2026, tips in England and Wales record every load online, including your carrier registration number and your van's registration. Carriers are planned to follow from October 2027.

If you've tipped a load this month and been asked for your waste carrier registration number and your van's registration, this is why. Since 1 October 2026, the site that receives your waste has to record every load online, and those details are part of the record.

What changed on 1 October 2026
The Digital Waste Tracking (England) Regulations 2026 (opens in a new tab) came into force on 1 October 2026, and the Welsh regulations (opens in a new tab) on the same day. They put the duty on the operator of the site that receives the waste, not on you as the carrier.
For each load, the site has to record it in the government's digital waste tracking service by "the end of the second working day after the day on which the load … is received". The record includes who brought it in: your name, your carrier registration number (or transporter authorisation number), the registration of each vehicle that carried it, and the waste codes.
So when you pull in, have these ready:
- your carrier registration number, the one starting CBDU in England
- the registration of the van or lorry you're tipping from
- what the load is, so the site can give it the right waste code
Scotland and Northern Ireland
GOV.UK's digital waste tracking service page (opens in a new tab) gives "January 2027" as the month the service becomes mandatory for receiving site operators in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
What's planned for carriers
The same GOV.UK page sets out what it calls planned dates for waste collectors, which includes carriers, brokers and dealers:
- from autumn 2026, a private beta for an invited group of waste collectors
- from spring 2027, a public beta open to all waste collectors
- from October 2027, the service becomes mandatory for waste collectors
These are plans, not law yet: the page says the dates are "planned for the development of the digital service and accompanying legislation". Until that legislation is made, nobody can say for certain what carriers will have to record or how. We'll update this guide when it is.
Your own paperwork
The new regulations are about what receiving sites record. Your own duties haven't moved: you still give a waste transfer note when you collect business waste, under regulation 35 of the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 (opens in a new tab), and consignment notes for hazardous waste.
In DoRoutes
DoRoutes puts your carrier registration on every waste transfer note it makes, and records each tip's ticket number and weight from the driver's phone. The driver app in the user guide shows what drivers record at the tip.
