If you've tipped a load this month and been asked for your waste carrier registration number and your van's registration, you're not imagining it. Since 1 October 2026, sites that receive waste in England and Wales have to record every load in the government's digital waste tracking service, within two working days. Who brought it in is part of that record: your name, your carrier registration number and the registration of the vehicle.

The duty sits with the site, not with you, but the site needs those details from you. Keep your CBDU number on your phone and in the cab.

Carriers are next. GOV.UK's planned dates open the service to all waste collectors in spring 2027 and make it mandatory for them from October 2027. GOV.UK calls the legislation for that planned too, so the details aren't settled yet.

Our guide, digital waste tracking at the tip, has the detail, with links to the regulations and GOV.UK.
